Have you ever felt vulnerable?
Vulnerability is the space where there are no barriers around you. You are truly YOU- your innate essence, without judgement. It is the time where we can lower the walls around us. Think back to a time when you went swimming in the ocean or a really big swimming pool when you were a child. That feeling when you realise, you’re in deep water with nothing around you to support yourself but your own body and mind. You have to rely on your own thoughts and physical capacity to get you back to safety. Our bodies dive into survival mode.
The feeling of vulnerability can make us feel unsafe and unanchored. This feeling can occur after session, therapy, life experiences or arguments with people we love.
In this moment something amazing happens. We realise just how powerful we are- that our capacity to rely purely on ourselves and pull ourselves out of deep water is profound strength we would have left unchartered if it were not for vulnerability. It goes deeper than just the power to pull ourselves back to safety with no external resources. If we can embrace the vulnerability. If we can acknowledge that we have the tools to get back to safety when we desire it- then we realise that we can relax and explore the deep water a little longer. That we can enjoy the sound of the water, the vast stillness and exquisite views. That we can stretch our bodies backwards and float aimlessly with the current. We can close our eyes and listen to our hearts beat with the crashing of the waves. We realise that we are surrounded by life (water). That it may be turbulent or peaceful but that we have the capacity to navigate both and enjoy all of it. That we are here to experience- everything that this life has to offer.
What would it take for you to embrace your vulnerability? To know that your strength and capacity is greater than you have ever imagined?
Perhaps, a therapy session would be the perfect place to start.
